It's New Year's Eve already????!!!!!

I can't believe it is new year's eve already!!! My cough has turned from chesty cough to tickly, dripping down the back of the throat cough, so I have had another fitful nights sleep, coupled with trying to decide whether the newly 18 year old had come home yet or not!!!!! In fact I had to laugh when hubby woke me up to ask if I had heard him come home yet, as he normally doesn't even bother!!!!
Had a nice meal with our friends last night, Barney provided the floor show, playing tackle rugby again with his very bedraggled soft toy!!! DS2 was out at a birthday party and DS1 was busy taking his new phone back to the phone shop as it had stopped working already!!!!! We are spending more and more time childless these days and I am finding it quite an adjustment. I know I have mentioned this before, but it does take some getting used to!!! Funnily enough, our boys have often tackled things at the same stage even though they are 3 years apart in age. DS1 as he was slightly behind with his milestones due too his Dyspraxia and DS2 who is very quick so was always very ahead of himself! So here we are with one 18 and one nearly 15 and they are both suddenly out all the time!!!! Hence the Derby and Joan feeling I am having!!!
dad still struggling with his illness, so off to visit him today and see if I can cheer him up a bit! Hubby back at work and for once no entertaining to do - we are going out to friends tonight!!! I am looking forward to a bit more puppy cuddling tonight as our friends who have a new addition at their house are bringing "Bart" in his puppy cage! Will try and grab a few photo's if I can! (Don't tell Barney!)
I must have been under the weather as I completely forgot about the Studio Calico reveal night the other day!!! So unlike me! Probably for the best as I have not been tempted by any add ons!!!! My new years resolution is to use up stash I have before buying any more!!!! I may keep my monthly kit for a month or two and see if I use any up but if I don't I am going to be firm with myself and cancel it!!! I have resisted all sales so far too! Crafting has gone on to the back burner at the moment, so I need to find my mojo pretty quickly!! I have a challenge to start for scrapbook apprentice!!!! Talking of which I think we find out who is the first to be voted off today!!!!! Well, supposedly!! Have a great night, whatever you are doing!!! TFLx

The Birthday Party

Yesterday was the big birthday party for Chris's 18th birthday, we held an open house and entertained and fed lots of people! Unfortunately I had woken up with a bad cold and chest, so ended up coughing and spluttering my way through the whole day, courtesy of Beechams all in one capsules!!! At least I made it through the day! Finally climbed into bed at midnight and have only just surfaced this morning! Hubby has gone to work so I am just reclaiming the house and piling up the recycling for the bottle bank!!!!! As is the case on the occasions, I seem to have quite a bit of buffet food left over! I have a fear of not having enough, anyway we will be able to eat it up today and hubby has taken a very up-market pack up to work!!!

It was a lovely day and although very tiring, I enjoyed it all. Not sure DS1 knew what all the fuss was about, but it suited me to celebrate his coming of age!

Off to do a bit more clearing up, before having a bath and going out to a friends house for a meal this evening! It all eating at this time of year! Now what shall I wear???? TFLx

Compliments of the season!

I hope your Christmas was just as you planned it! We had a lovely day and my dad managed to make it to our house for his Christmas lunch after all, so everything was complete!

I cooked myself into the floor, producing lunch for 11 of us and it was all enjoyed and eaten by everyone. We played on the Wii fit and had a great laugh ski-ing on "Family Ski." Barney had a great time with his new squeaky teddy! It kept him amused all day, playing tackle rugby with it!!

Yesterday we spent cleaning up and putting away, Jonni went to the sales with his cousins, armed with his gift vouchers. Later on we went out to friends for drinks and eats and got home at 2am! Today I need to bake and bake for Chris' birthday bash tomorrow, so look out Morrisons, here I come! More shopping!!!! TFLx

I just get out my Delia Smith's Christmas book and go through the chapter on the last 36 hours!!!

Friends coming over for drinks tonight and eats, so our Christmas cakes will be tested - remember it's the mini versions?!

Went to visit dad last night and although he is showing some slight improvement, I doubt that they will be able to join us for lunch tomorrow :( It wont be the same, but I wish him better quickly and if that means staying away and keeping warm in bed then that's what he must do!

Had a lovely birthday for DS1 yesterday, a few friends and family dropped in and we had cake and Cava so it was a nice day.

Ok, it's official I am old!

My elder son is 18 today!!! It's great, but I just don't feel old enough! Now for the embarassing bit! A photo of him on his first birthday!!!

Happy 18th Birthday Chris! Hope you have a great day! Fancy having a baby at this time of year!!! I blame the parents!!!! At least he arrived on the 23rd and not his due date of the 25th!!!!!

Project 28 - Money Wallet tutorial

As requested by Jackie, here is a tutorial of how to make my money wallets.

You will need;

1 sheet of 12x12 patterned paper (single sided) for each wallet

small off cut of paper and card

Double sided tape

Sewing machine (optional)

button

sticky pad or magnet to close

corner rounder punch

Rubber stamps and ink pad for greeting

1. Using one whole sheet of 12x12 patterned paper, fold into three exact sections at 4 inch intervals. trim off a 1 inch wide strip from one side of the paper after folding. Place a strip of double sided tape along the bottom edge and fold over to wrong side of paper along the edge of the DST to make a narrow hem.
2. Apply double sided tape along the side edges of the lower two sections of the paper. Peel off the backing and fold the top third of paper down first and press. Then fold the bottom third of paper up to create a pocket for the money to sit in inside the wallet.3. Cut one third of the narrow strip of paper off and remove. Stick the other two thirds together using double sided tape, to form a strip of double sided paper for the closure. Round the corners of this strip at one end only.

4. For the greeting card pocket, cut an off cut of toning paper that is larger than a credit card by three quarters of an inch on all sides. Apply double sided tape to one long edge and fold over a narrow hem as done before on the wallet. Apply double sided tape to the other three sides and stick in position on the right hand side of the wallet card. See first picture above to help.

5. Place the wallet closure on the outside of the wallet and adjust length by eye. Hold securely, whilst stitching around the outside of the wallet using the sewing machine, then trim away excess of closure close to stitching. Tie the ends of the threads to secure the stitching and trim away.

6. Glue a button to the outside of the wallet closure using silicone glue and leave to dry. Do not crease the wallet to fold it, but wrap around a small tube and roll on the desk at the centre to get that nice curve. I used my tacky glue tube to curve it around and rolled it on the desk top, just around the centre.

7. For the greeting card, draw around a credit card and cut out a rectangle of cardstock - I used core-dinations card. Round all four corners using a corner rounding punch. Sand the edges of the card to decorate, using file or sandpaper. Stamp your greeting on the card and to and from on the reverse. Slide greeting card inside front pocket of wallet as in photo at top.

Fill the wallet with your gift and close using a sticky pad. Add initials to the outside front of the wallet at the bottom corner, using stickers or rub-ons.

Takes very little time and is very easy! Hope you still have time to make some! You could use them to give shop gift cards and make fake money for your greeting card instead! TFLx

Money Wallets

I needed to make some money wallets for gifts for teenagers so I was looking for a template, but I could not find anything that I had in mind, so I made my own up!

Each wallet is made from one sheet of Anna Griffin christmas paper. They look just like fabric, so I stitched them on the sewing machine!

I made a little card pocket on the front and drew around a gift card to make the greeting. This could be used to hold a gift card too if you were giving that rather than cash! I find teenagers just want cash these days! I wrote the initials of each person on the front of the wallet, but you could use alphabet stickers instead. TFLx

Yay! School's out!

For me anyway!!!!!! (Because I work part time!) Finally reached the end of term, culminating in a hectic week of frenzied Christmas activities and cardmaking and 'leaving do's and Christmas orders and baking and............

I can now turn my attention to the festivities, having crossed a few last minute jobs off the list! Got the boys to their hair cuts tonight and took all my festive bottles for the hairdressers. A few last minute parcels have arrived, including a golf club for hubby but they have sent a right handed driver instead of a left handed driver as ordered!!!!!! Smoked Salmon order arriving tomorrow - gift from FIL. Need to complete my last minute baking tomorrow including making the soup for Christmas day and the brandy butter for the mince pies. I ave a couple of sweetie blooms left to do and post the hand delivered cards locally.

Had a TV problem, with our reception being frankly, pants! Got the TV guy in yesterday and apparently we have water coming in somewhere, because a bird has pecked the top off the aerial!!!! He is coming back tomorrow with his long ladders to fix it! Can't go into Christmas week, without a full range of TV choice! Was going to visit the boys old babysitter tomorrow, she is 82, but now have to stay home. Have got the buffet preparations in hand for DS1's 18th birthday party and the icing is making a remarkable recovery on the cake. The 'land slippage' has stopped, so it may be recoverable once I get it decorated!!!

Got my next lot of stash for the Scrapbook apprentice challenge delivered yesterday and I have to say there is quite little of it, so this will indeed be quite a challenge!! Cardstock and that is about it!!!! Will have to get my thinking cap on!!

Real reindeer!

Yesterday was Victorian Christmas market day where I live and they had real reindeer! I just could not get anywhere near!!! Lots of wide eyed children crowding cloe did not leave room for couple minus any children to get anywhere near! This is the best shot I got from hubby holding the camera above his head and me shouting just take several! needed a step ladder like the paparazzi!! Pipe bands, brass bands, choir in Victorian dress, it was all there!

Bumped into friends with ther two dogs, so went and had a hot chocolate with cream and marshmallows outside a coffee house in the square and watched the garland dancers.
There were old fashioned fairground rides, a steam organ, hot roast chestnuts and loads of stalls selling yummy things!! I bought a tree decoration, I just had to have it, does it remind you of anyone??? Barney on our tree for ever!!!

Got my christmas shopping completed now, so that's a big relief! Wrapped most things last night, then had a take away whilst watching Sports review of the year, then Top Gear. Got lots to do today, need to finish some sweetie bloom orders that did not get done and bake more mince pies!! Only two days left at school, so need to write my cards for the children I teach. Wonder how much I will actually get done? TFLx

Pretty Aprons

I finished my two aprons for orders, made using the vintage pattern above I bought from a french antiques market, whilst on holiday in the summer. They are slightly different styles, both made using Cath Kidston fabric for that authentic old fashioned look. I love them both!

This one has contrasting fabric on the belt, straps and hem.

This one has the gathers into the shaped yoke but all in the same fabric. So pretty and very 1950's. There are going to be some well dressed chefs on Christmas day!!!

Making another 3 sweetie blooms for orders today and going to our local Victorian Christmas market. Hope to get some great photo's using DS2 camera as mine is still broken :(

Yesterday it rained continuously all day!!!! At least it is dry today, so it should be fun, even real reindeer!! Got to be some fab scrapping opportunities there! TFLx

It's my Blogaversary!!

My first post here was done exactly a year ago today. I was not sure if I would keep it up, but here we are, one year on and I have managed most days apart from ill health or holidays! I have committed to this and not only made time to craft but made a small profit doing it! I love to share my crafting ideas and have really enjoyed my Christmas countdown of crafting projects during November (starts here if you missed it!!!) Thank you to all who have posted comments on this blog, I appreciate all your encouragement and am committed to another years worth of craft!!!! Back then, I did not even know how to upload a photo, never mind make slide shows and share templates! It has been a steep learning curve, but I have thoroughly enjoyed it. Congratulations again to Jackie, my blogaversary RAK giveaway winner! I posted it yesterday, so keep your eye out for that postman!!! TFLx

Had a great meal last night, although tinged with sadness that our deputy is leaving. Good luck to her in her new headship. I had roasted tomato and red onion soup followed by chicken wrapped in parma ham in a redcurrant jus and treacle sponge and custard!!!! It was yummy!!

Today is like a skating rink around here! Loads of multiple car pile ups in black ice! The humber bridge is closed and general chaos everywhere! I am off to the hairdressers to get my highlights done, so I think I will walk!! Going to take Barney out and see what the footpaths are like. Apparently all the rain last night has frozen, but it washed all the salt off the roads which is why it's lethal!!! Need to pop into town to finish Christmas shopping! Burtons and Dorothy Perkins have a 20% off day and Woolworths are starting their closing down sale, so I may get some bargains!!! Stay safe and I will post my winner later, all being well!!

I finally caught up October!!!

Yes, I finally scrapped my day for Shimelle's album for October! Good job I am not journaling my Christmas or who knows how far behind I might be!!!! Already! I have not even taken my November pictures due to the demise of my camera, so I hope to sort that out eventually!!! Did not use the album prompt this time, just made a collage of photo's of different sizes.

Today is my sister's birthday! Happy birthday to her!!! This time last year, the album I made for her for her significant birthday last year was one of my very first posts!!! A purse album from 7 gypsies that I got from Dyan at 'Art from the heart'. It seems so long ago now!!! A lot has changed in a year! Scrapping wise!

Just finished school for the week, only one week left to go! Apparently my dog and cat treats were very popular at the school fayre with only a few cat crackers remaining! Made free choice Christmas cards at card clubthis week and hope to do the same with the other half of the group next week.

Got my works Christmas do tonight, although at the moment I don't feel like going, I am sure once I get my glad rags on I will feel a bit more Christmassy! Off to paint my nails and have a cup of tea! Catch you tomorrow!

Sewing on card

Saw a post on one of my craft forums recently, for help re sewing machine use, as sewing on layouts and cards is so popular at the moment! I used to be a sewing teacher so here goes with my 10 top tips.

1. For sewing paper, I use an 80 needle but a 90 needle is stronger if it breaks and a 100 needle or denim needle is even stronger.

2. I use regular sewing cotton. The only way to use embroidery thread is to wind it on the spool and sew with your card upside down, loosening your top tension slightly, so the thicker thread lies on the surface and the other thread "couches" it in place.

3. For even stitching, make sure you have inserted your needle correctly, as some have the flat part of the shank to the back and some to the side.

4. Make sure you have threaded the spool in the underneath with the thread coming off in the right direction (check handbook for individual details.)

5. Paper blunts your needle, so if you start missing stitches, it is time to put a new one in - NOTE it will not sew fabric after paper, so I keep one marked with nail varnish for paper only in my pin cushion.

6. If you are still having tangles. make sure you bring the bottom thread up through the card by turning the wheel by hand, one whole turn, whilst holding the top thread. Then when you start, they can both be held on the surface. This should stop tangles.

7. Use a larger stitch size than fabric, as holes close together make perforations for easy tearing!Dont try to reverse as too many holes makes the cardstock tear. If you want perforations for an invitation reply slip or something, sew without thread at all.

8. When you have completed your stitching, pull both threads to the back of the cardstock when complete and stick down with DST before trimming.

9. Experiment with various stitches, but complex embroidery ones on paper may just result in holes.

10. You can sketch an outline shape on paper and then stitch around it with fabric underneath, then, once finished, you cand tear away the paper to reveal the fabric shape underneath, which can be cut out and used as a small embellishment.

The tree is trimmed!

Took yesterday off crafting to get Christmas up and running in this house!!! We did our annual trip to the gardencentre for our purchase of the tree and lunch!!! We bought our usual 6ft Nordman fir tree, had lunch then brought it home to spend the rest of the day putting it up along with all the other festive decorations. We had a smaller artificial tree in the new room and then there is the half tree (hung flat on the wall) in the dining room and the stair garland along with the fireplace garland and the outside lights on the bay tree!!! I was tired out when we finished and had to have forty winks!!!

I still have not got around to getting my camera fixed. Took these photo's using DS2's camera. I did take my camera in to Jessops on friday, but they wanted £25 to send it away and an average camera repair for a Sony was £179!!!!! So I wont be using them!!!!

I printed out the photo's to do OCTOBER's Scrap Your Day page yesterday!!!!!! I will try to get round to completing it today! I have my work to do, my foreign parcels and cards to post, Barney to walk, the ironing to do and two apron orders to finish but apart from that........ Lol!!! I don't think it will all be possible today!!!! Better make a start!!!!

Talk about coincidence!!!

I don't believe it! I post about doing an online class with Claudine Hellmuth and lo and behold I log on this morning to find a comment left on yesterday's post by Claudine herself!!!!! Then, that is followed by a post from April one of the owners of Studio Calico!!! I never knew such illustrious people visited my blog!!! Just when I'm taking a brief crafting respite too!! Lol! Why didn't they drop by when I was in my best creative flow!!! Lol! Anyway, just been catching up with Tim Holtz twelve tags of Christmas and there it is again!! Claudine Hellmuth goodies! I am so inspired, but just short of time!!! Thanks ladies for taking the time leave a comment on my blog!

Had a fab day in the kitchen all day today baking mince pies for hubby's birthday tomorrow, he is not well bless him, with a throat and chest infection - been to the doctors today for his annual visit!!! He is never ill, well not in the last 20 years since we have been married, except with a throat infection, always the first week in december!!! I am feeling very guilty actually as this will be the first time I have no pressie for him to open tomorrow! He wants a new golf driver and that is certainly something he needs to choose himself!!! Anyway, mince pies are made; 18 for him to take to work and 18 for me for Christmas, complete with brandy butter! Grandma's recipe! Had to nip out and get more butter to finish them off this afternoon. Also made some blind pastry cases (i.e. empty) for christmas party food too! Will become quiches at a later date! And 8 mini mince pies for times when you just can't manage a whole one!!! Freezing them as we speak!

Now for my Royal Mail rant!!!! On the way to Sainsbury's local for my butter, I had to pass the parcels office, so decided to try and track down my missing parcel from Asda; one computer game for DS2 for Christmas. Apparently posted out to me on 4th November, but as yet has not arrived. Anyway, duly queued up and asked at the counter only to be told it had been returned as I had never been to collect it!!!! How could I????? They never left me a red parcel card to say they had tried to deliver it!!!!!! I was furious!!! Particularly as I had been in there last week to collect two stash parcels!!!! The man behind the desk could offer no explanation!!! It would be back with Asda by now he said!! Are you supposed to be psychic???? *A parcel awaits!!!!!! A parcel awaits!!!!* No!! I got no such vibes! I rang Asda when I got home who declared it could take 6 to 8 weeks to get back to them and until then, they are unable to issue a refund or send another so DS2 will not have it at Christmas!!! I am speechless!!! I wouldn't mind but I ordered on October 14th!!!! How come it will take 6 to 8 weeks to get back to them??? Is the postman walking there with it???? I am not impressed by Royal Mail or Asda entertainment!!! Phew! Rant over!! Off to eat another mince pie and write hubby's card!!! TFLx

Claudine Hellmuth online class

I decided to take an online class with Claudine Hellmuth through SIS TV, as I had seen a lot of her products being talked about and have so far been a bit hesitant with paint and canvas! Anyway, I duely signed up and have got together some of her products to have a play with! So far, I have sticky back canvas, and multi medium (Matte) but am waiting for my paints to come with this month's Studio Calico kit. Originally I was going to do it with paints I had, but decided to order a couple of her colours to have a go with as both Brenda Pinnick and Dyan from Art from the heart were raving about them! This class will take me out of my comfort zone a bit, as I am not very slap happy with paint! I need to lose my inhibitions!! Free my creativity a bit! We will see how I get on! I like the idea of this sticky back canvas for mini album covers! There is some transfer of design using the multi medium too! Funnily enough she is the guest designer at Studio Calico this month! The online class makes 9 mini canvases that can be mounted together to form a canvas collage.

Just found this TV extract from the Martha Stewart show on her blog! Will have to have a go at this!!!

Been another cold and frosty day here, still all crunchy under foot and to be snow during the night!!!! Made my chocolate log today with my Year 4 RE group, donated it to the school fayre and finished my cat and dog treats too! Off to make a couple of aprons for orders, remember this?

Bloomin' marvellous!

I made up my orders for my sweetie blooms from my craft sale last friday night, they are taking over the dining table!!! I just need to complete the lolly blossoms for the front of each one and wrap in cellophane.

I made my blooms from chipboard flowers, silk flowers and stamped and punched flowers 54 of them!!! Took a lot of time on sunday, but worth the effort, will get the lolly blossoms done tonight I hope.

I was hoping to have a go at the Tim Holtz tweleve tags of Christmas over on his blog. I have not got all the goodies I would need to complete it exactly, but thought I would have a go using my own supplies and some of his techniques. If you fancy having a go, take a look here.

I am going to demonstrate making a chocolate log at school tomorrow, so will have to get my ingredients together tonight. Been and bought my chocolate swiss roll from the supermarket and just need to whip up some buttercream later. Been busy at cardmaking club today finishing off our cat and dog treats for the school fayre, we have made quite a few now! Should make a bit of cash for school fund! TFLx

Voting has started!

The projects have gone live today for the Scrapbook Apprentice! Pop over here to the Creativity Life blog and take a look! We submitted two layouts and two cards and it looks like the judges have picked their favourites and are just showcasing one layout and card for each person. It's funny how they picked my favourite card but not my favourite layout!!! I am biased though as I liked the layout with Barney's photo on! The card I made for my sons eighteenth had a pocket on the back which contains the photo blocks which 'pop up' as you undo the fastening, creating instant photo cubes! This of course is not visible on the screen!!! A great suprise element courtesy of elastic bands! The Sorrento layout is made using a sheet of acetate as the flap, edges with a scallop stamp to create an extra layer! The pocket underneath houses momentoes of the trip we took to Capri and would contain extra photo's but I was only allowed one single photo in the challenge. I made the ribbon flowers by hand. Anyway, it's interesting to see your work in print!!! Pop over and take a look, it's tough competition!!! Can you make your mind up? I can't I like them all! Great work girls!!!
