Christmas Countdown Project 13 - Upcycled Advent Calendar

"Upcycled" the new buzz word for saving something from waste and changing its use! I found an old encyclopedia that was being thrown away and made this cute advent calendar from the pages! There is still loads of pages left over to make more! You could make it with coloured papers if you prefer. Scrapbook paper might be expensive at two boxes from each sheet, you would need twelve sheets. Wrapping paper would be cheaper, but not too flimsy or the origami folding would not be easy and you have a lot of folding to do!
This idea for the boxes, came originally from here, Creature Comforts is one of my favourite inspiration sites for colour schemes, design and makes. I already had these cute numbered pegs I bought in Germany last year and had not used, plus the red twine, so I knew the feel I wanted for this calendar. There are loads of ways you could display them too, but I chose this wired stand from Homebase that I already owned. A cake stand would be good too, especially if it was red and spotty!!
The boxes I made are different sizes and they need a small item in each one before tying them closed. You could keep them for next year too and refill them. Remember, the treats inside can be activities you do together, like bake biscuits, not just sweet treats to eat daily! These boxes would make great wedding favours too.
You will need:
Pages from a book to recycle
8 pieces of origami paper for the special 24th box! (Optional)
Bakers twine or string
Numbered small wooden pegs or similar numbered tags
1. Trim the book pages to the sizes required for the boxes. I used a variety of three sizes of box. You can make these boxes in any size just remember the lid needs to be a 1/4 of an inch bigger than the base when you start off.
large size box 5"x5" lid 4 3/4" x 4 3/4" for base
medium size box 4 3/4" x 4 3/4" lid 4 1/2"x 4 1/2" for base
small size box 4 1/2"x 4 1/2" lid 4 1/4" x 4 1/4" for base
2. Fold each box according to the original Creature comforts blog directions, here is my folding in pictures:

Add your small gift to the box, then tie up with string, add the numbered peg or tag to the box and display how you choose for the calendar. Make another 23 boxes!!!
Join me tomorrow for another crafting project. TFLx
P.S. Dad just came in from the Cenotaph, sporting his RAF "wings" and medals! One for the album!
